So you have a grayscale image that you want to colorize but you don't want the whole thing to be all one color. You could accomplish this task by using either the Polygonal Lasso or Magnetic Lasso tools and colorizing each part individually. Does that sound like it's the only way to you?

There's a much easier way to accomplish this which I will show you.
First off, open the image you want to work on. Next, duplicate your background layer as many times as you need to for your composition and be sure to colorize your image. With that done, you need to select the Eraser tool as well as a soft, round brush. A 70-pixel size brush is ok to start out with but once you get near the area you don't want affected, I'd recommend that you get the brush size down to 38 pixels at the most. This way, you won't stand a chance of erasing anything you don't intend to erase.
Also, keep in mind that you'll need to colorize your image each time you create a new layer.
